CONSIDERING A PET AS A HOLIDAY GIFT?
The holiday season is just around the corner, and along with fun gifts like cozy socks and a shiny new toaster, some people might be thinking about surprising loved ones with a pet. A furry friend can bring so much joy on that special day! However, it’s important to take a moment to think about a few key things before making such a big decision.
Gather the essentials — food, bowls, a litter box, cozy beds, toys, blankets, leashes, collars, and a crate so you’re well prepared. Establish a schedule for feeding, training, and cleaning, and assign tasks, ensuring they fit with each person’s schedule.
When bringing a new pet home, prioritize their safety and smooth integration. Think about how they’ll adapt and how your current pets will react. Introducing them slowly is key—keep your new puppy or kitten separate from existing pets for at least two weeks to ensure their health and comfort, especially after vaccinations. Prepare baby gates or separate rooms to ease the transition. Since puppies and kittens are curious, pet-proof your home like you would for a toddler, removing hazards.
CONSIDER EXPENSES. You’ll need to budget for veterinary exams, vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and deworming. Additional costs may arise for lifestyle-related vaccinations, microchipping, and preventatives for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Pets can face unforeseen issues that lead to expenses, such as surgeries for injuries or illnesses. Pet insurance can help manage these costs and is worth considering.
SOME ODDS AND ENDS. Save a life and adopt a pet when possible. Make sure the gift fits the lifestyle of the recipient. Young rambunctious puppies and kittens may not be the best gift for an elder. Choose an adult or better yet adopt a senior for a senior! If you buy a new pet make sure the breeder is reputable. Don’t support the exploitation of dogs and cats from breeding mills. Consider your work hours and how you will care for your new charge. Will you be traveling and if so, how will your pet be cared for? Not all pets travel well. Will you be moving soon? If so, wait until you are settled to get a new pet.
These pets are in your home and you are their protector, advocate and guardian for their lifetime. With this thoughtful preparation, your new furry friend will settle in beautifully, creating a happy and harmonious household!
